Spring: A Burst of Life
Spring transforms Ilfracombe into a vibrant canvas of natural beauty. Bicclescombe Park erupts with daffodils, tulips, and wildflowers, creating a spectacular display of color. The season kicks off with the traditional Jack in the Green May Day festivities, bidding farewell to spring and welcoming summer’s spirit.

Ilfracombe’s annual Jack-in-the-Green celebration, a vibrant tradition that heralds the arrival of summer. The festivities commence at 10:45 am in Wilder Road Car Park, where participants gather for a lively procession through the High Street, Fore Street, and St James Place, culminating at the Clapping Circle above Wildersmouth Beach.
The parade features a green-clad ensemble, including towering figures such as Brigid—symbolizing growth and renewal—her partner Bres, and a new tree giant named Thorne, all accompanied by dynamic drummers. At the Clapping Circle, traditional Maypole dancing ensues, with children from the audience invited to participate. The event reaches its peak as ‘Jack’ is ceremonially stripped of his leafy attire, symbolizing the welcoming of the Spirit of Summer.
This celebration is open to all; attendees are encouraged to wear green to immerse themselves fully in the spirit of the day. For additional information, please contact Events 4 Ilfracombe or reach out to the May Day team at maydayilfracombe@gmail.com.
